What are the different types of charts I can make and when should I use each type?

Use the simplest solution to clearly convey meaning when deciding what kind of chart to use. Following are the types of charts you can make in Claro and some tips on when to use each type.

Column Chart

A column chart is similar to a bar chart but displays vertically instead of horizontally. A column chart compares different groups and can be used to show changes over time, or under different conditions, or for comparisons between items. Big changes are more effectively viewed in columns.

For larger data sets, use a line chart.

Categories are arranged along the bottom X-axis of the chart and values of the series along the Y axis.

Key Words: compares, ranks, relates

Pie Chart

A pie chart visually compares the parts in a whole. Pie charts show proportional relationships at a point in time.

Keep in mind when creating a pie chart that only one Data Series is allowed. Click the second and third Series titles and click the Remove button to delete the other two series. You can add as many Categories as required for your data but keep in mind that the more you have, the less clear the distinctions will be for the viewer. Common practice suggests no more than five categories.

Key Words: portion, share, percentage

Line Chart

A line chart is used to display changes over time, especially if there are small increments. Line charts are useful for showing trends and also for showing variations in value (ups and downs). You can also display values of more than one data series trend for comparison and contrast.

Key Words: trends, growth, decline, variations

Pyramid Chart

A pyramid chart is just like a column chart except the columns display as pyramids. Be cautious with the use of this chart as it may be visually misleading with some data.

Area Chart

An area chart is used to display cumulated totals (either numbers or percentages) over time. You can use it to show how each series adds up to a whole or which part of a whole each series represents. It’s useful to emphasize the magnitude of differences between two or more sets of data.

Key Words: contrast, compare, relationships

Cone Chart

A cone chart is just like a column chart except the columns display as cones. Be cautious with the use of this chart as it may be visually misleading with some data.

Curve Chart

A curve chart is used to display changes over time in a continuous flow. Curve charts are useful for showing trends, particularly when there are smooth patterns.

Key Words: trends, grows, declines, gradual, continuous

Cylinder Chart

A cylinder chart is just like a column chart except in 3D, the columns display as cylinders.

Step Chart

A step chart is used to display data which changes intermittently but remains the same between these changes. For example, fixed term mortgage rates over a period of years.

Key Words: steps, plateaus, set or fixed rates
